DynDNS has been a staple of DNS routing for years now. Routers have had support included in their firmware for so long you'd be hard pressed to find one without it. Gamers and small business owners have been using it for years to host servers for things like Teamspeak, Ventrillo, FTP or VNC access across the web. The free service was fine for 99.9% of the internet because you didn't need any of the services that the paid model offered. Dyn finally smartened up, first building in annoyances such as having to log in to your account once a month through the website to finally just killing off free service altogether. The alternatives such as NO-IP are following suit, adding annoyances and just making transparent service impossible. Whats Joe Average to do?

DuckDNS is a goofy named DNS server that is hosted on Amazon VPC and offers exactly what users want; simple integration. While setting it up via routers can be a bit problematic, gamers such as myself just want a simple solution. Their website, which can be logged in to with Twitter, Facebook or Google+, has some software solutions to update your IP. For Windows there is the standard background utility that constantly updates or a Powershell script and a VBS script that you can set up as a recurring task. None of these solutions are to my liking, unless you are on DSL or dialup (egads!) your IP will almost never change without you forcing it to do so. Also, allowing Powershell or VBS scripting through your firewall is a serious security risk.

I decided to create my own using AutoIt3, a simple shell scripting language that I use for many things. The program does exactly what I need it to do; tries to update your IP until it is successful or you click cancel, then terminates. Simple, easy and transparent like it should be.

The program is available here and the source code is included so you can modify it to your liking. It works by either hard coding your domain and token into the program or by adding them to the commandline. You could also add it as a recurring Windows task if you wish but a simple run at startup works for me. The program itself does not require internet access, it uses Internet Explorer to update so IE will require net access for this to work.
KitGuru, relatively new hardware and tech site to the nets, has a simple step-by-step for those who want to install Win7 from a USB Stick. There are tools for this kind of thing but are hit and miss even from the same utility. This shows the complete commandline set up and works every time. No extra downloads required.
Those of you who have had issues with the X-FI and more than 4GB or RAM can grab the latest driver to fix that. Currently it is only for Win7, but that will change soon. Also fixed is the PowerDVD 8.3 Dell version issues and the Dolby/DTS passthrough decoder with Media Player (as if anyone uses it). Be sure to grab the Alchemy Update as well if you want 5.1 available to your older PC games.
You can see the new FFXIV engine in action now in benchmark form and find out how well you can expect it to play in the process. I'm not a huge fan of the Final Fantasy games, the story and ideas are fantastic but the games are always just boring enough to stop playing.
Apparently the latest 257.15 Nvidia drivers no longer block PhysX functionality when coupled with an ATI video card. It's still up in the air as to whether it's intentional or an omission, but the driver will currently work unmodified for ATI users.

Perhaps this has something to do with the sudden departure of Manju Hegde, founder of Ageia Technologies - the company that created the PhysX co-processor that Nvidia bought and incorporated into it's drivers. Seems Mr. Hegde has decided to leave his VP position in CUDA and switch sides to become VP on AMD's Fusion which he believes to be the future.
Some new and updated Graffix Goodies for you:
Ok GodMode is not the correct term, it's really an "All Tasks" folder but it's handy as hell. I for one really despise the wizards, grouping and other idiot stick tricks employed by software companies to cater to the lowest common denominator. Sorry, grandma shouldn't be there to begin with so making it pretty, excessively probing and containg lots of pictures and large text is a waste of time and effort, give me the quick list already.

Setting it up is pretty simple, just create a folder with any name you want and then add:
.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
to the end. Open with windows explorer and voilĂ ! More comments and information can be found here.
Tomato, the widely used custom firmware for the Linksys WRT54 and Buffalo WHR-G54 series of routers, has been updated to 1.2.7 fixing the minor DDNS error for HTTPS. Anyone with a qualifying router not running a custom firmware like Tomato is simply shooting themselves in the foot.
Nvidia has released a new set of WHQL drivers for all Windows platforms unto the masses which now supports OpenCL 1.0 and includes SLI support for new games like Borderlands and Modern Warfare 2.

I suggest using the new Driver Sweeper to remove the remnants of your previous driver for best results.
Some Interesting Freeware:
  • Driving Speed 2 is a decent looking circuit racer with only 2 tracks and 11 AI controlled opponents, but up to 8 player over Lan or Internet.
  • AutoHotKey a favorite of mine has been updated to 1.0.48.04 1.0.48.05, fixing some important issues.
  • Quadrigital, a hard to pronounce but interesting little application that lets you create Comic Books easily using your own images. A few things hold this app back from being truly great such as AntiAliasing for clearer images, zoom and crop for those images in panels, better text box support and a simple panel design tool for odd shapes.
  • STDU Viewer is a PDF, DjVu, XPS, TIFF, TXT and CBR/CBZ all in one viewer with bookmarks. An excellent idea that still needs some work; for instance bookmarks can't be deleted and it would be nice for it to remember where you were last every time a file is opened instead of only when you load it from the MRU list. One to keep an eye on.
Another group of updated software for the masses:
And for some sassy retro demake goodness: ASCIIpOrtal, yes an ASCII Portal game complete with level editor.
A bevy of updates to some great tech tools are now available.
  • DriveImageXML the freeish Drive Backup and Clone Utility has been updated to v2.11
  • Partition Find and Mount is a great little utility to find and mount lost or deleted disk partitions nondestructively. Free version limits transfers to 512 kbs though.
  • AutoRuns, the essential crap-killer has again been updated, now at v9.54.
  • Process Monitor, another great SysInternals app that tracks file and registry changes is now at v2.7.
The new Direct X is on it's way and may actually be useful this time around as it focuses on utilizing the multi-core technology that has been around since 2001. Having multi-core built into DX will allow developers to take advantage of the tech easier but doesn't necessarily mean that proprietary pipelines such as those in FarCry 2 won't be faster.

Out of the pipe even before the hardware has been released; Dirt 2, Battleforge and S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat will all have DX11 support and Battleforge is already on shelves (actually Free - relatively speaking), so adoption is already ahead of the DX10 release.

Hopefully this new programming layer will allow those with slower systems but more cores to leverage against demands of the newest games being released to enjoy a better experience.
Stephan Didak has released an interesting utility called WiLMA that he wrote for his office setup. It maintains the position of windows across multiple monitors and while I have only two, he has just a few more:

As much as I don't need this kind of setup, I sure as hell want one.
I've just come across a new Freeware Virtual Drive Emulator for WinXP+ (including 64bit) that looks interesting, Gizmo Drive by Araina Solutions. The interesting thing here is it's ability to mount and encrypt Hard Drive images as well as mounting Floppy IMG images. I may include support for this into DVD Executor, let me know your thoughts.
Although I'm late on reporting this, Daniel_K has release an updated unofficial Support Pack for Soundblaster X-Fi on Windows 7. This was the only way I could get access to the abilities of my hardware when I first installed W7 and this incarnation contains the latest software and drivers. Hopefully this will curtail the niggling glitches with a few games and apps I have come across.
