Steam has added a new feature called Greenlight which allows voting on games you want to see on Steam. Anyone can start a Greenlight project and some just aren't getting it or just being a**hats. Adding things they want to see on Steam such as the original Metal Gear Solid, calling themselves the creators and getting banned in the process. It's a marginal time out but what the hell fellas? Look, it's simple: Author wants game on Steam, Steam for whatever reason has said no, Author adds game to Greenlight, Steam users vote on game, Game gets added or doesn't. See? Simple.

Two such games have come to my attention in this fashion.

First is Fibrillation, a game you can buy right now for a piddly $1.95 from the website or you can upvote it on the Greenlight Page. It's a 40 minute romp through a bizarre world with no violence or gore but plenty of atmosphere, puzzles and WTF-ery going on. There is no saving, just a blast straight through the game. My description does not do it justice, so watch instead:

Next up is Receiver which again can be purchased right now for $4.99, Greenlit here or you can get it free by pre-ordering Overgrowth, the sequel to Lugaru and thusly the reason I won't be getting it free. The game is involved to say the least, you will not be jumping in blind and blasting through without care. There are mechanics involved, complicated mechanics, cool mechanics, mechanics that big publishers would wipe away with abandon. It's also what makes the game worth playing and again I'm not doing it justice, so here:

Greenlight looks to be a great idea for the Authors and buyers on Steam. I feel there needs to be a percentage slider though. Right now, votes add 1 to the total votes required and after a set amount, the project is Greenlit. I feel that people who have purchased more games should have a heavier vote due to their obvious penchant to purchase from Steam. One or Two game buyers should continue getting their one vote, users with no games on their account or only free-to-play games should get 0 votes as far as I'm concerned as they buy nothing. You would have to massage the math of games purchased vs number of votes, but it solves the soon-to-be issue of purchasing upvotes.
GoG is in a generous mood with the introduction of the newer classics now available. Fallout can now be added to your GoG account absolutely free assuming by some freak chance that you don't already own it.

You can also grab Heroes of Might & Magic V Bundle and Assassin's Creed Director's Cut together for a measly $20, hell yes!
What? You need more than that to check this out? Ok, it's GamersGate Rockstar Week and the entire GTA series for PC is a measly $12.49. That's GTA 1, 2, 3, Vice City, San Andreas, 4 and Episodes for 13 lousy bucks, t-h-i-r-t-e-e-n, thirteen! It's available for the whole week, that's 6 days and 9 hours left to cash in those beer bottles. Better yet, tell some sucker shopper at the local Abercrombie & Fitch that your mom took away the plastic for crashing the beamer and you're short $20 for some overpriced jeans - they can obviously spare it shopping there.

I'm going to buy the damn series again just on principle at that price.
Before today I had never heard of DotEMU. Then a small blurb on a freeware site mentioned that the service was celebrating it's year anniversary by giving away 5 games over the next 5 days. Well that got my attention.

On arrival I could immediately see the resemblances to GoG is style and game catalog. The games are retro, DRM-Free and can be downloaded anywhere, anytime. You will find more than the $5.99 or $9.99 price points available, there are some games as little as $1.90 and as high as $19.95 plus a few familiar freebies as well. They also sell some games separately such as Gobliiins, Creatures and Istar instead of only together as a pack.

The catalog itself is pretty sparse currently but contains some games unavailable on GoG. The bizarre Salammbo for instance (which is available on GamersGate but at twice the price), and some games that aren't available on any service I'm part of, such as Metal Mutant and Guilty Gear Isuka. I've signed up and will keep my eye on this little store, you never know what may be around the corner.

Today you can get Hammerin Harry for free (Emulated from the Arcade version), yesterday it was Gobliiins (which I unfortunately missed) and the next three days will bring Robinson's Requiem, Dragon Breed and Warzone 2100 in that order. Sign up and snap them up.
Instead of waiting for boxing week, Steam has started up the sales events today. Daily specials will be introduced everyday with entire catalogs getting up to 80% off until Jan 2. Starting early makes it a lot easier for xmas gifting and having a steady stream of extra goodness doled out daily should make for an even bigger dent in the wallet than usual.
For the next three days you can download the Genesis Classic Golden Axe from Gamers Gate with a simple promo code from the Facebook discussion page. It seems as though this will be a recurring monthly thing so be sure to follow Gamers Gate Twitter account for updates.
GoG has started it's holiday sale with titles up to 50% off. This includes the Black Isle games just recently added like Balder's Gate and Planetscape Torment. The sale will go on for the next 21 days BUT the sales are switching out. Each developer's catalog is on sale for a limited time within that period. So if you are looking to complete that Black Isle collection, you will have to get it within the next six days, your Activison needs on the other hand will start in three.
If you haven't filled out a wishlist for Steam, you may want to now. From Nov. 24 to Nov. 29 Steam will be giving 30 people their top 5 wishlisted games each day. Couple that with the sales that will change daily, it will be a fruitful engagement for all.
Machinarium is an strange adventure game of twisted artwork, good music and excellent design. It has been on Steam for as little as $9 but I have never purchased it - and no, I never pirated it either. While I was not willing to shell out $20 for the game, I definitely added it to my "get when cheap" list. Amanita Design, the company behind the game, released it sans copy protection and surprisingly enough, it was pirated the hell out of. This sale, dubbed Pirate Amnesty is for those people. You can now get the full game and soundtrack for a mere $5 from the website. Personally I would rather it on Steam and according to comments, I'm not alone. Having an email to a download link that will expire in a week is not comforting and having to pirate it again in the future when my backup disc dies really defeats the purpose. However at that price, I will have to snag it before the Aug 12 ending date.
This fantastically strange platformer is completely underrated. Now you can see why for as little as $1 (SWREG minimum price is $5.00). It has just been updated to 1.6 adding community campaigns totaling over 40 new levels in addition to the original game levels. I bought this game on Steam ages ago and it's brilliantly twisted, easily worth a fiver.
Lead and Gold, the old west multiplayer 3rd person shooter, will be playable for free over this weekend on Steam. You can preload the game come Thursday or just buy it now for 50% off (7.49 USD).
Ok, that's not the title of the sale, but it means essentially the same thing to my bank account. Steams Perils of Summer sale is as big or bigger than their Boxing Week sale. Going on from June 24 to July 4, each day will bring a handful of one day only sales with an additional roster of games on sale for the entire time. Today there are 710 games on sale, seven hundred and freaking ten!

Just last week was the EA Games sale that kicked the crap out of my wallet and now I have this to deal with. I'm not the only one complaining either as can be attested to by this Steam forum topic. No, I don't need these games - I want them damnit! Who can pass up things like The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director's Cut for $6.79? Not me, that's for damn sure!

Dear Steam,
Please give me a chance to fill my bank account up before you rape it in the future.
-Love, a devoted fan.
GunGirl 2's fantastic soundtrack by Josh Whelchel, who is also responsible for the sound track to The Spirit Engine 2 is now available from free to whatever you want to pay. The tunes, DRM Free and available in multiple formats, are definitely worth your time and money, just check out the page and sample it for yourself.
I loved the original Sam & Max game and while the new series started weak, it's managed to find it's stride and become a worthy sequel to the original LucasArts classic. Right now on TellTale you can purchase all three seasons for $49.95. This gets you immediate downloads of all available episodes while making you eligible for the end-of-season DVD's that include beaucoup extras for the serious fan.
Steam has it's Splinter Cell catalog on sale this weekend. You can get Splinter Cell, Chaos Theory, Double Agent and Conviction Deluxe for $45.99. You'll note that Pandora Tomorrow is missing from the pack as well and the Conviction Insurgency Pack DLC. Pandora Tomorrow is excusable as it's not even available on Steam for some reason, but the DLC could have been added at a discount. A tenner for 4 maps is about as inexcusable as Modern Warfare 2's $15 for 5, regardless of how large they are.

At any rate, already having the entire series on disk I still purchased it on Steam for the convenience of not having to use cracks to get around disk checks and system debilitating DRM while still being able to play online. It's a fantastic series (Double Agent notwithstanding) and if you haven't played it, kick yourself and buy it now.
Following in the footsteps of previous indie developers, Sleep is Death is now available for whatever you want to pay - so long as it's at least $1.75 to cover bandwidth and processing. Sleep is Death is a little like table-top Dungeons & Dragons, you have a Dungeon Master that creates the story and a player to interact with. The DM has the ability to change and create things on the fly and talk to the player through the characters.

The purchase gets you two downloads, one for yourself and one for the person you wish to play with. Versions for Windows, Mac and Linux are available and all future updates are free.
N00bs-a-Poppin' this weekend with double XP and a discount of 17% ($49.99) for those not owning the game already. This doesn't include the stimulus pack that was just released and since the original maps and the new 5 map addon must be played mutually exclusive, this gives those without the map pack some new targets for their double up weekend.
The third-person multiplayer deathmatch offering from FireSky is free for the weekend. If you decide to purchase the game during your gratis gamefest, you will receive free in-game bonuses for your cash. You must purchase through the FireSky website in order to get the free goodies which is a shame as the game is also available on Steam. Here's some gameplay footage:
I'll admit it, I've played through every Quake and official expansion pack available. I own Quake III; Yes I'm a bad person but now I can make amends by purchasing the whole series (minus IV but no one liked it anyway) for a mere $14.99 this week only. I will probably buy it for a few friends as well, just to make it up for my previous transgressions.

You will want to grab the Ultimate Quake Patch and the Ultimate Quake Patch II as well due to the updating that these free patches provide. You could also roll your own by grabbing a source port and the music addons from the FAQ page.
The fantastic gamepad utility has been updated to 5.7 and you may have wondered what had happened to it since it's can't live without days. Primarily the switch from free to payware made this once must have utility a $10, are you kidding me? search for something else. A shame really as it's progression from 5.3 freeware to 5.7 payware is really worthwhile and if you are sick of games like Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2 not having gamepad support then this is a solution.

Having used the freeware version since, oh forever, I had thought that Xpadder pretty much had everything under wraps and the payware version was more of a donation version of the same software. No, and whats worse is that you'll never know what you're missing without buying it due to the lack of a demo. True, the free 5.3 version is still available on other websites (Xpadder.com no longer has it listed) but none of the new features are present. Worse still, the homepage tells you little of what you are missing aside from a boring version history text box. The site needs a flash visual walkthrough of the new features that people like myself didn't know they were missing.

First off, you can now have a button do more that one action depending on how long you hold it. An example would be Bioshock where holding the use button down played the last audio log. Another fantastic idea is the addition of distance zones that press a key depending on how far you move a joystick or how far you pull in the trigger. This can simulate analog movement by allowing you to map the walk key for less than 40% movement while mapping the run key to the additional 60%. Once you have experienced these features first hand, it's impossible to imagine how you got along without them.

Yes, it's a $10 purchase and yes it was once free, but giving the author incentive to keep working on the app is what made these changes happen. If you're not a gamepad gamer then xpadder is not for you. If you are however, that $10 purchase gets you updates for life and access to the development zone on the forums where xpadder is switching from milestone releases to constant (1-3 day) updates.
